Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions about Barista Basics Academy Coffee Training

Can I wear flip flops, slides, sandals or thongs to class?

No. Enclosed shoes must be worn to our barista classes as you will be dealing with hot drinks. This is for your safety and for the safety of others.

How will my knowledge be assessed?

Online learning is now a requirement for all students undertaking our barista classes. Whilst it involves knowledge testing to be done prior to class and in your own time, it means that when you come to your class, it will be much more practical than it has been in the past. You will spend more time on the espresso machine practising what we are going to teach you in class.

We are first coffee training facility in Australia to offer knowledge testing online and we believe that it will now mean that our practical classes will leave students feeling much more confident in their ability to make coffee – the whole reason for undertaking the course in the first place.

Please note that you will not be issued with a Statement of Attainment at the conclusion of your class unless the online learning has been completed. There are approximately 80 multiple choice questions in the online learning and it may take 1-2 hours to complete.

What do the courses cost?

Course costs are as follows:

Barista Basics $120, Master Barista $199. There will always be cheaper courses being offered but in coffee training, you definitely get what you pay for. We offer the best trainer:student ratios in the business, the best qualifications in Australia for coffee-making, the most “hands-on” time on machines and unlimited consumables during the class. Most importantly though, we guarantee you will leave with a skill taught by passionate industry people, not contract trainers, simply “going through the motions.”

Are you accredited?

CBD College trading as Barista Basics Coffee Academy is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO 91399). We are registered by ASQA to deliver Nationally Recognised training relating to the units of competency SITHFAB025 Prepare and serve espresso coffee and SITXFSA005 Use hygienic practices for food safety.

Our barista trainers and assessors are have all come from the coffee/hospitality industry and also hold the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification.

Watch out for trainers that say they use a nationally recognised training program or say they issue an accredited barista certificate if they are not issuing a certificate with the Nationally Recognised Training logo on it. If they don’t mention that they are an RTO or in partnership with one, you may end up with a piece of paper that will not be the correct signal to employers. If a website does not show the certificate you are getting, ask to see one. If they cannot produce their so-called “accredited” certificate, chances are you will not get one!

How long is the course?

Barista Basics: 3 hours Master Barista: 5 hours

Do you have group rates?

Yes, if you book four or more people we offer a group discount of 15%.

Is it a hands-on course?

Yes, all courses are extremely hands-on. We use commercial Rocket, San Marino and San Remo machines in our commercial courses but we also have some SAECO, Rancilio and Vibiemme machines in all of our training rooms that students can use if they wish.

What do I get in addition to the course?
Do you have gift certificates?

Yes, we offer gift certificates to all our classes. Gift certificates make a great gift. The certificate that we send out to the purchaser lists the recipient’s name and has all our contact details so that the recipient can book a time and day that best suits them. It comes in a gift box and is shipped express post.

Are you a Registered Training Organisation?

Yes. CBD College is also 100% Australian owned and has been a Registered Training Organisation for over a decade. We specialise in providing training programs to achieve timely and cost effective solutions for our clients.

Can I get a job by doing these courses?

You need a skill and the right certificate to prove to café owners that you have been trained by properly accredited trainers. You get both of these with our courses.

Without a doubt, these days students will find employment a lot easier with an RTO certificate.

Do you have practice sessions?

We believe our courses will equip you with the necessary skill to get a job....in fact we don’t allow anyone to leave unless they can use the espresso machine! Our biggest advice to students asking us about coming back for life to practice: do a proper course that will give you the skills in the first place so that you can go straight out and get a job. It is only on the job that you will develop speed and confidence, not in a room where you have no guidance and risk “losing” all of the techniques you were originally taught. Students should not be nervous about how to go about getting a job straight away after completing our courses....the ebook and access to our job websites that we offer as part of our course package will help you to get that first barista job! Don’t forget we have run many cafes ourselves and can offer invaluable guidance on job placement as well. Cafes in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane use us as feeders for their cafes so there are usually job opportunities available.

Be very wary of coffee schools that offer practice sessions. Often these cost money and you might find that the one scheduled session that is available every week mysteriously always seems to be booked out!

Do you offer RSA courses?

Our sister business does offer Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Courses in Sydney only. You can book here: http://www.cbdcollegesydneyrsa.edu.au/

Are you Environmentally Friendly?

We are certainly trying. Barista Basics Coffee Academy is committed to remaining carbon negative. This involves an ongoing process of tree planting by the principals of the business which more than offsets the estimated 40 tonnes of CO2 that our business creates each year. We planted over 350 trees last year.

Other initiatives to reduce our call on energy involve a continued push towards online training materials rather than handouts of paper and DVDs.

Language Literacy and Numeracy

Students will need to be able to apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy and judgement and to take limited responsibility in known and stable contexts within established parameters.

What student support does CBD College offer?

Our trainers and assessors are both experienced and skilled in giving support to learners and in making reasonable adjustments to training and assessment to accommodate learner needs, where required. Where necessary, our trainers and assessors can make themselves available to meet with students outside scheduled course times. Ongoing support can be obtained by calling CBD College on 1300 616 218 or by emailing info@cbdcollege.edu.au

Access and Equity

We do not discriminate against any individual on the basis of race, colour, sex, or religion.

All students are treated equally. Our instructors will assist and support students where appropriate, especially those students with language, literacy, or physical disabilities, as long as the nature of the disability does not preclude them from completing the training and assessment. We do not tolerate discriminatory behaviour from students in any of our classes.

Any issues or questions raised regarding access and equity can be directed to the CEO.
